Advertisements and Social Responsibilities

I watch advertisements these days with some amount of curiosity and concern. In their effort to sensationalize, I see adverts are going off track to sell their wares. You see someone gyrating for the entire duration of the Ad, just to find out that they are selling hair oil.

But what really concerns me is some advertisements showing dangerous stunts to prove that their products are better than others. We had the Mountain Dew sales pitch which saw these youngsters plunge from a cliff on their bicycles. Then there are all these motorcycle ads which push the “go fast” concept (0-60 in 5 secs). The latest advertisement for Hero Honda has this guy speed across the path of a speeding train and “escaping” by inches and then doing a wheelie at the edge of a clip. Thats all we need more stunts to try out !!

I know that this is only an Ad, but do we need to be giving our youngsters these ideas? Isn’t there a social responsibility as well? The argument could be that it would be silly to ape what these advertisements show (hence the little barely visible disclaimer at the bottom of these ads about how these are performed by professionals and are not to performed at home).

What led me to write this post? Yesterday evening my son and his friends were standing around watching an “older” kid do wheelies at the edge of a gutter using his older brothers new bike. His dad saw that, came over and whacked him. FYI that kid is in 10th grade.

  1. Aftermaths of these kind of ads and Dhoom like movies will be like this

And speaking about ads, did you see Maruti Zen Estilo — little boxes, little boxes – loved that music and its Kannada version too (kaanji dabba, peenji dabba) heheh

  2. The effect ads and movies have on kids in scary. I remember an ad, I think it was for pepsi or something, where the guy bungee jumps and some kid jumped out of his balcony and died and also the Shaktiman scare where some kid was on fire I think and thought shaktiman would come save him/her… This was a number of years back so I cannot remember all the details. I wish the ad companies would think about the effects their ads have on kids before they go about strutting their stuff…

  3. So Sad to hear about all that. Yes, aptly said.. These kind of Ads need to really said in a better way, not sure they can completely avoid though.
puTTANNa kaNagaal & such directors used to use some indicative remarks for every action & I hope the modern Art Directors can really thing in those lines !!
May all those soul’s rest peacefully… Had heard couple of stories post Shaktimaan serial !!

  4. Is our censor board sleeping? Or do Ad-makers get away by slipping a little “something” in the hands of the Censor People so that they turn the other way when these things happen?

Our Government took a big step forward when it banned Ads of Liqour and Cigarettes. Guess it will need a harsh shake to ban Ads of this type too.

  5. TP: I have heard of the Shaktiman stories as well.

Veena: Today the mantra is “Sell at any cost”… its all about sales… its the same on TV news as well.. the more sensational the pictures the better the ratings… especially crime and accident…

  6. Vijay,
You have brought forth a very very important topic and as vani says where are the censors??

The scene is not very differnt in moves too.In good olden days there used to be one item dance sequence ( cabaret!) for front benchers and rest was senile. Now even the heriones are forced to wear carbaret clothes and gyrate…. Just dont have a normal movie now a days to watch too..

The censors have guidelines which are not strict it seems as told by asha parkeh ( she was chairing sometime back)..

Seeing the current trend future is absolutely scary..heriones will not wear anything at all!!!

The lesser said about the fights, fist cuffs et all in movies including special effect misadventures

  7. Vani: I never thought about that… I think the censor board focusses more on “sexually” provocative content…

MOHAN: Today’s heroines have put the old vamps out of business. One of my foreign colleagues actually classified some Indian song scenes as “soft porn”

  8. the challenge for advertisers is not how to reach consumers where they are, but how socially responsible the message is once it reaches those consumers, esp. kids.

  9. Vijay, you being in the same area(almost).. Don’t thsoe people guided by any rules & regulations.. I was trying to see what Vani is pointing to… A Kind of Censar board to Ads.. Like an ISO/CMMI kinds.. We need to put in some process to avoid & hence completing the responsibilites.
As RK comments, its ones social responsiblity.. Indirecly ours too, its we who rate them high & accelarating.. Lets stop watching & aping towards those & rest of them will come on the point.. Now I feel people have started develping aversion towards Saas-Bahu serials(Atleast people around me & my friends), I just hope that Producers have to know this .. Thats the gap to be filled,May be media can help them.. Try it out…!!

  10. Mohan..,

Heroines are motivated you see. People like us want to them to do that.. So its ultimately.. ! 🙂

I heard that only 2 kannada movies are super hit in year 2006, one was a remake by Kichcha Sudeep & the other one is Rambha. I have watched the first one, but didn’t dare to watch the second one!!!!
One more thing is the SMS.. its become like a source to all those soft porns which Vijay said. Cyber Crimes should include these too.. otherwise Trisha & such people will keep getting into the vicious circle of gossiping.. one day even we need to so conscious for anything we do.. !! People are watching us.. may be with a mobile camera! 🙂

  11. Veena,
It remindes me of a statement regarding rajnikanth movies and they being HIT! It seems even if 40% of rajni fans see ( read as buy ticket) the movie once, its a super HIT.

Same may be happening for our local heros too!!!

Sadly, in the name of western outfits, western culture seems to have seeped into our cultural roots in differnt names and forms.Argubaly, there are benifts in those but only when the bad things outweigh the good things we need to chuck those things out…sadly who is listening?

    cheers,
    mohan!

  12. Here is a shocking tale of some youngsters following movie stars in repeating the stunts..!

One more story comes out of Hyderabad police. Bangalore is no behind to Hyd in these things also!

I was so excited when I watched Dhoom II that I wanted to run to such sub-way to stream thru my bike 😀

And when I switched channels after the movie, I was treated with Hero Honda CBZ ad!! I was still more provoked….

What was exciting in it.. the guy rushes to a cliff and at the very edge of it he does a 360 degrees turn with great ease and stops!! AMAZING!!!!

Hmmmmmm well…Im not a 10th standard guy to do those things anyways… but I really donn understand whether those guys really can do it, ad ppl I mean??

  13. Mohan I am listening.. & We all bloggers.
Actually we are waiting to see your comments on sanjay’s blog! 🙂
Don’t you think, people like you, DS use these words like SAD, UNFORTUNATE quite oftent ?
Just a retrospect.. nothing more.. its called Atmaava lokahana as Bellur said. 🙂

I am not sure on the 40% thing, I heard it from one programme & also read on news paper.. in their reviews & I beleive they would see quite a lot of data for it.
I myself watched 2 movies last month, Tananam-Tananam, Tenali Rama.. KallaraLi hoovagi is in Q.. Prashanth keeps ‘compalin’ing why only kannada movies ? We watched on English movie called ‘Catch me if you can’. that was cool, after that none of the english titles seem to attract my attention, I am I am more a negotiating factor at home.. 🙂

Vijay will now ask me, do husband given such options really ? Madam need to answer this…!

  14. Veena
SAD and unfortunate are just verbs denoting different states of mind…. ALAS, BAD are also similar meaning slangs!!!

Thanks for pointing it out may be next time will recheck before doing a release 🙂

Infact i have never seen a movie in a theatre in the last..mmmm 8 years maybe? I pay the cable wallah cool money to bring these movies to my home and before you can say viola, shall add that i have a cool home thatre system too.

When i said “listening” it meant the competent authority. But, even if bloggers like us who visit cinemas (myself?) resist and desist from such movies, maybe they will go away?

Vijay, some profanity word may have caught sriks statement for moderation i believe.

    cheers
    mohan!

  15. Mohan,
That was a good cool note. Cable alli movie nodlikku , theatrege hogi, Q nalli nintu Ticket togondu cinema nodokku bahaLa vytyaasa ide bidi. Honesly, watching movies on TV/Cable/CD/DVD is next to impossible.. Ads in between or the phone calls or the guests or the people around will ultimately spoil it 🙂
anthu duddu uLisokke nimma hatra sootra keLbeku bidi.. ahaaa!

  16. Veena – Good point on ads in cable/TV too 🙂

But i beat that system too. I record the movies ( my 5 year old does it on PC), next i use a VCD cutter in which all ad’s, objectionable scenes are edited. I have numerous CD RW on which the movie is burnt in week end and watch withoug shillies.

Off late current wallahs gave trouble by removing power when the girl in the movie decided whom she should marry and krrrr the current goes ( bellur style)…so a UPS is laughing away at BESCOM.

Dont worry madkobedi…. that cini movie shtyle is different from this but here i have an option to switch off the DVD like i did after 15 minutes of watching “the hulk”

Only after all these oolisifying am yet to retire by 40’s atleast but inflation is keeping me on toes allways

    cheers
    mohan!

  17. Veena: You have seen more movies in 2 months than I have seen in the last 5 years (at least in theaters). I hope my wife doesnt start blogging… if she does… I will have to go into hiding.. especially on topics like movies etc…

  18. Vijay. pppstt there is a plan veena is brewing to invite you some place exotic with your wife.. be sure to be present there ( only yourself) Off for now…she will be behind me for this one!

  23. veena,

    usha,
i can come on wed. (20th) by 6.15pm to bugle rock. amele dwarka hotlu.

  24. I rememebr the ‘Thumbs Up’ ad several years ago where a guy jumps off the cliff. Two kids actually tried that and dies. I ams ure most of you remember that. It was more than 10 years back. After that incident, ‘Thumbs Up’ continued airing the ad, but had a “Do not try this stunt at home” thingy at the bottom of the screen in a very small font.

But, where do you draw the line for such ads ? Is that really bad ? I am not convinced it’s that bad. But, at the same time, i am also not surprised that a small kid wants to ‘copy’. The censor board should walk in and take some actions. BUT again too much is too bad. Drawing that fine line is the biggest challenge.

@ Srik : See, your post gets moderated ina ll the blogs, not just mine. I wonder why …I think I know why 😉

    @ Vijay : “baMDavALa ella public”…does that translate to “I am becoming a millionaire” ? 🙂

    @ SB : LOL…no, not again…..on that note, I actually do enjoy ‘Jackass’….yeah right, I am shallow 🙂

  25. Is there bloggers meet happening?? When? Where??

Well.. as far as the meet is concerned, Im fine and game. Waiting to meet u guys at Bugle Rock, a bit late though. Reason has been communicated to Veena 😉
