Whats in a name?

11 Jan

Perhaps its my twisted sense of humor that makes me see these things.

Walking in Jayanagar I saw a board for the “Texas Institute of Technology”. See the picture below.

The names okay (though I really have to question the Texas in Jayanagar part), but look at the short form (below)…. Is anyone thinking?
.. and look at the byline…..

Whats the answer?

3 Sep

Sometimes kids ask the most philosophical questions without actually knowing it (or so it seems).

So I am driving the other day and Nikhil sees this kid who is cleaning a truck. The guy is probably the same age as him. Suddenly he asks “Pappa, why is that kid there and I am here? Why is his life different than mine?”

Whats the answer? Fate? What do you tell a 13 year old?

Crazy Ads

27 Aug

Its getting tougher to watch Ads with Nikhil especially when he insists on an explanation. Even scarier is when he offers his own explanation. So much so that I am now scared of watching TV with the guy. Doesn’t help when the ads have their own convoluted way to get their message across.

The latest barrage of questions came when we were watching ICE AGE 2.. supposedly a kids movie and suddenly a sanitary napkin ad pops up (during a kids movie!!!????). I don’t remember the name of the brand but it goes like this.

Some kids are building Castles on the beach when suddenly a wave comes in and destroys the castle. While they are looking forlorn, the lady who has accompanied them suddenly remembers the contours of her sanitary napkin and proceeds to draw them on the beach. The next wave of course gets handled well and the castle survives….

So Nikhil pipes up… his first question is “What is this advertisement selling?”… when I have recovered fully I tell him its nothing that he would ever buy (prompting a cold stare from the wife).

His next question (by pure self analysis) was “Does it have anything to do with flooding?” (I think he legitimately meant flooding on the beach)….

I got up, bowed to my wife and said “I will leave it to you”…and quickly walked out of the room.

If looks could kill.. I wouldnt be writing this post 😉

Karnataka MLAs – I’d rather have them fight than rule

4 May

Come to think of it, I think I’d rather have the MLAs fighting each other. If they stop doing that, they go off and pass idiotic legislations.

The latest gaff is that women cannot work in night shifts. Isnt that taking away the right of a person to make a living?  Instead they should be passing laws that ensure the safety of these very people and punishing anyone who violates these laws swiftly.

This comes on the heels of a piece on IBN that says that companies are wooing more women.

P.S: BPO’s and ITES companies are exempted.

Who is right?

2 May

May 1 was a holiday so I decided to pick up Nikhil from his TT class. We then decided to stop by SLV for a quick snack.

As we are eating, we are watching this family of three trying to cross the road. Wife crosses with no problem. Husband is holding the kid’s hand (kid’s probably 5-6 years old), and talking on the mobile phone.. not looking at the road at all. Suddenly we hear a screeching of the brakes, a Sumo almost hits them (but doesnt thankfully). The guy yanks his child back and retreats. Now he does something very very dumb. He slaps the child, who now starts crying.

Nikhil is looking at this and asks me “Why is he slapping the child when it was his fault? If someone needs to be slapped its him.”

He looks at me with a wink and says “Sometimes elders try to shift the blame on children.”

He is so right.

Abi-Ash – Tirupathi Travails

26 Apr

So now the Andhra Govt is ordering a probe into Abhi and Ash’s Tirupathi visit where devotees were made to wait while the star couple took its time seeking the Lords blessings.

While all this is okay, how much do you want to bet that this is politically motivated? The Congress Govt in AP… elections in UP…. see any links?

I had a friend who was in Tirupathi when Madam Sonia (the real PM) was there. His experience to put it in his own words was “Horrifying”. So how come no probe then?

Noise Pollution – Law vs Civic Sense

22 Apr

Alex from Bangalore posted a comment on an older post “Pay Per Noise” which was Murali’s satire on Noise Pollution. However his comments were serious and I’d thought I’d post them here to get reactions. It brings out the subtle need for civic sense in everything we do. Heres his comment:

There is this neighbour of mine (in Bangalore) who is bent upon spoiling the peace and quietness of the road we live in. She conducts Music classes early in the morning at her house and the crooning is audible almost 200m away. This disturbs our sleep as well as our mood every morning . And once she is done with her music classes she turns on the TV with very high volume. The situations gets worse on holidays or on a weekend when their home theater system is switched on.

My parents are 60 years old and cannot bear such high decible levels. Repeated requests and fights have yeilded no response / improvements.

This couple (our neighbours) is a young couple with two young school going kids. I wonder how they bear such high decible levels. These are educated people behaving in such ignorant and socially irresponsible manner.

Is anyone aware of what the laws are to curb such a menace and any equipment to help disturb their noise generating equipment and help reduce the noise levels inside our home?!!

Only a public crusade and agitation against such socially irresponsible behaviour will help curb this menace.
