  2. this new spelling (idly) of good old idli has me stumped. upto about five years ago, i had never seen the spelling with the y. then the local udupi (or should it be udupy?) stores here started selling iddly not idli. now i see it here on vijay’s blog – so i assume that the new spelling is gaining world wide (in more than the usa sense of the word) acceptance, eh?

    – s.b.

  3. Both idly shops/restaurants figured in blogs one in vijay’s and
    other in Bellur’s
Great news and congrtulations to both the stores and blogs
interesting observation no sambar is served in either places
so it is idly chetny (unlimited) coffee competition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Had been to nanjangud day before. I was reading out the hotel names, & alas one read as.. bhramhaNara ooTada mane & said food coooked by them is served.. I got a very mixed feelings, but yes yes.. I did remember your blog & RK there…

brahmana bhojana(bahujana?) priya!! is an age-old gaade 🙂 Amele veena anno hesrige power ide saar 🙂 & there is another example called ‘Veena Stores’.. tumba jaasti annisidre, comment edit maadbidi…

  5. On a completley different note (as if that’s new in Vijay’s blog !), the other day my wife and I were wondering why there are no fast food chains in America which serve Indian food.

Come on the bean burritto and the awful 7-layer is a hit in Taco Bell. I bet a Brahmin Bar all over America with a rolled up Dose and To-Go Idli-Vade will be an instant hit.

  6. I remember a place called “Curry in a Hurry” in NY in the Mid 80’s. It was one of those “Deli” type places where you point to what you want across a counter.. The Namma MTR stores have introduced the Dose and Vade wrap… the only problem is aa thara thindre maja baralla…

How about Vade with Chutney filling inside (a la a jelly donout)…

  7. Before attending girish’s samvaada program, myself, Vani, sanjay & his friend Jigar went to Veena stores on sunday morning for breakfast!
Your blogpost & comments are not even there, we literally have to try try try try to ask for idli vada.. later we compromised to anything 4 that is avaialble 🙂
Finally got shavige bath & it was good one! Atleast now I can proudly say, I have taster Veena stores something!!
aadru jana astond ‘langaru’ yaak haakthaaro devarige gottu!!

  8. @IPTV: are you referring to SLV by BMS college of Engg / Sonata corp? I sure think so. well I used to be a regular there for 6 years when I was at APS and BMSCE 🙂

@decemberStud: I heard there are few like Dosa camp in NJ. I heard there are few in Chicago and SFO areas.

@Veena: regarding “brahmana bhojana(bahujana?) priya!! is an age-old gaade :-)” –> Bhojana antha itru nadeyaththe, i sure love bhojana. hehe… and bahujana too depending on the kind of conversation. adhralloo saaru like on Vani’s blog [http://whitephosphorous.wordpress.com/2007/04/02/udupi-saaru/]

  9. Ram: The one in front of BMS is so so now.. used to be great during the old days.. the one IPTV is referring to is near the BSK 2nd stage BDA complex.. been there since the mid 70’s…

  10. what about onion dosa at brindavan!just love that…that too with molga podi on the side..one place where they serve the wafery dosa with onion and NOT the ubiquitous onion uttapam….and ample parking space though its on MG Rd..must try is the oota as well…can suggest the small place outside Malleswaram rlwy station- awesome shavige baath too…

  11. @Sugandha: Never tried Onion Dosa there…I have had the oota there and yes very old Madras type… Place outside Malleswaram Rly Station… will need to try that out…
