Bangalore Dug Up

27 Apr

I’m resigned to the fate that I will not see a “non dug up” version of Bangalore in my lifetime…

The digging started when we were growing up…that was to lay the Cauvery pipeline..

Next came the flyovers and the ring roads…

Next came repairs to the flyovers and ring roads because once they were built the geniuses who designed it realized they were headed in the wrong direction..

Then there have been these excellent and super efficient oversized concrete coffins that are passing off as underpasses

Now theres the metro that has basically taken the city landscape and torn it apart…environmentalists created a hue and cry about trees being felled..but with time they seem to have gotten quiet…in addition people were uprooted from their houses…

Now I hear that there is an elevated monorail system that is coming the monorail people are all set to take over from the metro guys…

…oh ya and theres a “signal free” road being looked at from MG Road to the new Airport…

Progress is inevitable..but progress without planning and without any moves to protect the ecosystem is criminal…

As one elderly gentleman who lost his house to the metro in Indranagar said..”I have to pay because of their (govts) bad planning..just because they gave me compensation it doesnt make it ok”.

Vijay- I always fail to understand. Even in here, there is lots of haphazard jobs being done, but still it is somehow ensured that common men do not suffer. One question (off the topic)- any idea as to how Profressor K S Deshikachar (Chemistry text book author) is doing????

I totally agree with you..its a mess of unplanned development…. they are also planning to make the outer ring road signal free…so a lot of intersections which are dug up! 😦 didnt they plan the ring road keeping in mind future needs? especially when they planned to make SEZs along the ring road 😦

oh and there is new road which has come up in GKVK campus after much protests leading to more tree felling!

and i cant bear to see Nanda road and surrounding areas 😦 but atleast they havent chopped off all the trees..

sorry for all the ranting in the comments section!

No problems with the are 100% correct..

..its so frustrating…everything is planned so that the “current budget” is used up…its a big scam…take the Tagore circle underpass in Gandhi Bazaar. There was absolutely no need for that..civic groups protested but then they go quiet…makes one wonder why…

Apart from all the ranting…makes me wonder, can people like us do anything? Other than go cast vote for the best of the worst?

Well I am okay with progress. But then when they first asphalt the road and then dig it up the next day to lay cables/pipes piss me off !

😦 Gandhi Bazaar underpass. I still don’t have a clue if the traffic was that worse at peak time. Anyway they have dug it and hopefully they close it. (If anything had to be done, it was on the Banashankari bus terminus intersection and on the Kanakapura road/outer ring road intersection.) Both the outer ring road digs are yet to be finished.

And add to all this, BBMP comes in randomly and marks (+5.2m etc) on house walls to mark for road expansion. 😦
