Bengaluru Airportu – Too Smaaalu

31 May

Used the new Airport for the first time yesterday. Took a bus from Jayanagar at 6:15 AM. Was in the Airport at 7:15 AM. Not bad at all timewise.

First views of the airport. Very impressive. There are some teething problems but people are working very very hard to correct it.

One big problem… THE AIRPORT IS TOO SMALL. The place seems too crowded. I mean this airport is supposed to have been built to handle traffic for the next 5 year. It already seems to be bursting at the seams. Everyone is getting into everyones way.

Talking about bursting, the bathrooms are too small.

The restaurants area doesnt seem to have been planned for comfort. Just tooooo many tables stuffed in there…

Food is too expensive inside (thats true of every airport). I paid Rs. 80 for 2 Idlis… (Bhattru at SLV in Banashankari still chargers Rs. 4 per idli and gets complaints about how his place is getting very expensive). Quality of food…. BAAAAD. But then I never rate an airport by the food.

All in all.. an okay experience. But with so much planning, I wish it was more spacious. Soon we’ll have people sharing seats (one by two).

Returning on Sunday. Lets see how the return journey home is.

swalpa jaga kodi sir, yes I too heard it looks small to handle such big trafiifc now itself u can not imagine what is situation a year after. It is great u covered the distance between Jayanagar to BIA at just 60 minutes of course that was free hour
hope services will improve as the time flies

Sigh! That is sad. Sad that they built the airport for 5 years AGO! We were hoping for more direct flights from US to Bangalore. I guess it will remain a distant dream. Even now, Jet will fly from NJ/NY to Bombay and put us on the 3am flight. No getting away that there are fewer vestibules than required in Bangalore. If this is the plight on a weekend at 7:15am, can you imagine all the huge planeloads arriving at the same time in the evening!

I have been using Bombay and they are very fast wtih their customs. It will be interesting to see how fast we move and how quickly we get the luggage.

@My3: Arrival area is definitely better… dont worry its definitely an improvement over the old one
@Xylene: No..no.. the idlis from Madagascar cost more… customs duties 🙂
@Veena: Theres an old joke that the airports are only making money on the food…

was there yesterday morning to drop someone off
    1. visitor parking approach is very narrow and unnecessary turns
    2. very few kiosks
    3. people sauntering here in the dep area
    4. horrible genset vans on the way out of the airport powering godknowswhat

Best part of the drive was that got fantastic jackfruit and chakkothahannu after going to devanahalli town
