The youngster celebrated his birthday last week (or Birthaa Daay as they call it here). He goes to school, hands out sweets and then comes home holding his rear end. The reason. He got the “Birthday Bum” treatment.
For those of you who are not in the know (as I was), it is traditional for your friends to kick you in the backside, one for each year. I don’t know when this “tradition” started.
I then asked my niece who is a second year Medico. She looked at me and said “Sure thats normal”.
Can anyone shed light on this bizarre tradition. What are the kicks meant to achieve? I’m glad that it wasn’t there when we were in school. Or am I 😉

The tradition is as old as the practice of celebrating b’day itself..
The first time i received it was in college though… we used to fight in school only after cricket matches (umpiring issues.. sigh!)

vijay, the practice was definitely there when I was in school. We weren’t kicked, but were bounced on the floor (one for each year) by a group. At the time, our biggest worry in a coed school was to make sure our skirts didn’t fly.
The tradition is as dumb as smashing birthday cake in somebody’s face.
you would expect that thick skin thus developed would help one to “cya” better 😉

hosa batte guddhu antha hodiskondiddhu gnyaapaka idhe – but certainly bb (birthday bump) wasn’t in the school I studued in bangalore. it is all exciting to distribute candies in the class but it is not to get those kicks 🙂
so it is probably a diff version of hosa batte gudhdhu but for very special occasion “birthday”?
I got to know about birthday bum during my engineering … its so horrible.. 2 people(or more depending on the weight of the person) hold the birthday boy in air (two legs and arms hanging in air) and rest of the gang gives a whacky hits on the back… It sounds so cruel though…

Man, that’s definitely a birthday tradition I hadn’t heard of before. Sounds painful – good excuse for the youngster to have taken the day off 😛

Well to ma knowledge it just another reason for us to kick someone’s a$$, and being it his bday he wont complain.
whether birthday bums, splashing cake over the face or just bouncing,, all these are utter nonsense!!! tell me wht enjoyment do one get by doing all such nonsense things? instead make the guy happy… stop entertaining by foolish acts………

This stupid “tradition” as some immature people call it is also very risky. I know of at least two people who have been partially disabled because of dislocated disks. If you have recurring lower back pain, look back to your college years, you might understand why.
