Elephant Fury

10 Apr

I watched on TV last evening, an elephant going beserk in Thrissur (Kerala) and killing its Mahout. While I feel sorry for the guy, I could not help feeling sorrier for the elephant.

Here is a majestic animal that deserves to be in the forest. Instead its carrying a ton of “decoration” on its back, and chains around its ankles while being surrounded by thousands of people. The other thing that disturbed me was people hurling rocks and bricks at the poor animal which probably enraged it even more.

I remember a few years ago, an elephant going on the rampage on RV Road (near the RV Teachers College). Though no one was killed, some were injured. The reason was that the Mahout was plucking hair from its tail and selling it to people who beleive it brings good luck.

Everytime I see an elephant with chains around its ankles, the same thought occurs to me. “I wonder how we’d react if we are treated like that?”

Vijay, you’re a guy after my own heart. I say you deserve to share your life with a pet. Does the missus share similar views?

In terms of cruelty to animals yes… a pet at home?… hmmmm thats a topic for discussion..

That cruel mahout got his just reward, for a newspaper report said he was violently poking and prodding the tusker to do his bidding. Even as I watched the gory scene on TV I knew for sure that the animal would have been pushed to the edge, hence the barbarous reaction.

God has punished the mahout for his mistake. He has been gored to death! Man is the cruelest animal and the deadliest.

I am reminded of the film haathi mere saathi.
    Elephants are such gentle giants.
Let us remember :Live and let live.

Well, just because there was an aberration we managed to notice what was happening. Otherwise there are such events happening day-in and day-out!

The Mysore Dasara is one great example! I wonder what will happen if that elephant, which carries the “Chamundeshwari Goddess” on its back (I forget its name), ran berserk!

Some sorrow for a death of a human. But are we asking for it ?

There was an article a year ago , on the origins of elephants in religious festivals or occasions. Lost in lore unfortunately . Such a gentle giant , but the platform is so small – are we surprised when the recipe for disaster works out ?

We have seen numerous stories of what the elephants suffer before they succumb to retaliation . And then its scary .

Let them be in the wild where they should be. Remove the chains, and get them off the circus ring.
