The Watchman

The “Watchman” and his family are a common feature of any house that is under construction. Usually it is a family that the building contractor places onsite to keep an eye on things and help with odd jobs during construction.

If there is someone who truly sees your house literally rise from nothing into all its splendorous delight it is the good old watchman. Yet when the building is done, the first thing that happens before the house warming is they are moved elsewhere on the property (other than the main house).. suddenly their “value” decreases because now there are locks and bolts in the new house. The same thing happened when I built my house as well. So this is not a discourse, just an observation.

All these memories got jogged last evening during my walk when I passed next to a  just completed house and the watchman’s family was “packing up” to move out of the house. I overheard the contractor telling the watchman.. “No you can’t stay in the Garage, the Owner needs to park his car here for the next couple of days”… sigh…

  1. very true vijay
we both me and my wife met the watchmen who was doing honours during construction
last week he came and talked to us enquired about us like that we also did and asked where he is now he said he is doing this work now in a big building under construction in yelahanka. this guy was very nice and was also doing labour work whenever required
he had met with a small accident during our house construction thank god not much damage and only some injurys
nice remembering the people who have seen your house coming up right from scratch
    nice of you vijay

  2. Yes vijay,
My heart got wrenched out seeing him being evicted from the place he guarded.

One more very interesting and sad thing here is these labourours build houses for the millions but dont have a single roof on head or a land below their feet!!! What an irony.

But god has his own ways of doing things

  3. Its the way GOD has designed to work.. If everybody starts owning the companies, who will code & who will test & who will exectute projects.
Our watchman still visits us & just forget about watchman.. even those bridge construction workers where my dad used to work in a north karanataka state attended my wedding… She said that she had seen my brother when I he was born & she displayed the gratitude so nice…. her name is timmi, we still remember her & her brother Ranga… They still call my dad saahebru.. & our house as saahebru mane..!

Those contractors are wreckless… some really lack manners! forget about with the watchman even with the owners, I find it so difficult to speak with ..! they really need some behavioural trainings we give it here.

Vijay, evening walk nalli enella nodtheera and over hear maadtheera ? Does madam accompany there, I guess she should otherwise devare gathi 😉

  4. Veena: I dont go eves dropping on other people’s conversations.. but if someone is talking loud enough to be heard in the next town, then I can help but overhear.. but yes I observe things as I walk… material beku reeeee

  5. I dont know whether it happens to you or not.. when ever I see something interesting, I feel like taking a picture. Prashanth utters, oh ninna blog gaa ? It has just become a important part of our daily routine!!
    aaytu.. accepted… 🙂

  6. Eventhough I am a fun loving person, I was just moved by your observation. This reminds of all those cleaners in hotels, who are always close to some nice food and never get the chance of having them. (I meant the first hand food:()

  7. Great observation Vijay! 🙂

I think these watchmen are the best example for what’s called “Detached attachment”! Everybody’s dying to practice it and here we have someone who’s profession requires him to be in that mode forever!
