What the hell happened to Dwaraka Hotel?

7 Jun

For all of us who grew up in South Bangalore, Dwaraka Hotel on Bull Temple Road was the only place where you could get decent "khali" Dose. Imagine my chagrin when I found that they tore down the building about 6 months ago. No one knows what happened. Are they building a new place? Did Dwaraka relocate?

Did the owner of the place finally decide to demolish it and build new offices for the IT sector?

Anyway until I hear different, heres one more "old Bangalore" spot that bit the dust (literaly).

Last time I heard from a regular customer was they are setting up their business in NR colony. Not sure of the exact location, but I guess it’s in the vicinity of the last bus stop.

Good to hear that… They were doing too well to close down.

just heard from my uncle that dwarka hotel fellow fought a lot to stay at Bull temple road. it seems he spent a lot on courts and lawyers, but had to finally give up. it seems he has put a board near NR colony saying ‘Dwarka hotel:opening shortly’.
a cmplex is coming up at the place where Dwarka prospered so well!

one of my friends has this to say about Dwarka:
We used to live in the rented out house just next to dwarka hotel. Our landlord lady ( ajji) was quite egoistic and one day one of the tenents of dwarka hotel ( 1st floor had boarding rooms where karim khan stayed) threw some water by mistake and ajji took the hotel to court.

True to rane ishtyle ajji brought a “hired” sakshi. The judge asked the trembling shakshi what his problem was and why dwarka has to be close down.. The sakshi ( he was the worker of ajjis farm in periya patna) mumbled that dosa vasne was irritating him. The judge in true nagabushan gowda style asked where do you live?

    The saksh said “periyapatna”

The case was closed and ajji warned. This actually took place some 30+ years before.

I remember eating FREE dosa on vijayadashmi day after the case…

More updates awaited…..keep listening to RK 24/7

    My friend writes:

It will be located in NR Colony 7th cross (actually adu mukhya raste). NR Colony bus stand inda come down towards the road leading to Vidyapeetha, you will find Katte balaga, Ravi Medical stores, a bakery at the corner, amele Krishna wine stores, and next comes Hotel Dwaraka.

He is getting it renovated from the past one year. In fact he was asked to vacate his old place around 3-4 years back after the court order. Though he may be doing good, even the landlord should have a say on his property alva. Dwaraka hotel owner dinakke saviraru roopayi labha madkondu, tingalige kelave noorugalashtu badige kotre landlord ge adu tingala tindigu sari hogalla. I heard he vacated after collecting a few lakhs from the landlord anta.

Mostly nimmantahavaru Chutney patre scheme keltare antane, Dwaraka owner hakidda board sari ansatte. The board read like “Dose ge moorane bari chutney kodalaguvudilla”. But, the trivia is the supplier would pour unlimited quantities for the second time itself.

RK.. thanks… let us go there to inagurate it.

Your friend is right on the chutney part. They serve you unlimited chutney the second time anyway…

The other thing about Dwaraka is they had the largest number of signs saying “Do this…”, “Do that…”, “Dont do this”.. etc etc

All this while i have greatly enjoyed the food their, and now thank you guys, the stories around is as good as the steamy khali dosa with 2 rs extra benne on it with unlimited chutney like u mentioned.

    Hotel Dwaraka
15, Katte Balaga Raod, Near Colony, Basavanagudi, Bangalore, Bengaluru
I know this information is very late but still whoever would like this info please use it to get to eat at the hotel we all grew up liking it.

  14. Sudhi January 11, 2010 at 9:29 am #

The other thing about Dwaraka is they had the largest number of signs saying “Do this…”, “Do that…”, “Dont do this”.. etc etc

Yes. They used to go like, “Ondu dosayge eraDene baari chutney koDuvudilla”, “Eradu dosayge moorane baari chutney koDuvudilla”, “nooru roopayige chillare siguvudilla”, “one-by-two service illa”, “kuDivuya neeru; kai thoLeyabeDi”, “Kai thoLayeyuva neeru; uguLa beDi” and on and on and on.

Once my friend told the hotel proprietor guy that all the boards can be replaced by a single one – “nimage naavu yenoo koDuvudilla; summane duDDu koTTu hogi” 🙂 Needless to say that the proprietor guy was not amused…

      Sudhi..I remember those signs 😀

      LOL at your friend ….

      • RamMmm February 22, 2010 at 12:22 pm #

Hilarious was the note above by Sudhi and his friend’s comment. 😀 My eyes are watering after laughing so hard. I used to visit Dwaraka at Bull Temple Rd in the mid-late nineties, but I then moved far south.

I see the Dwaraka at N R Colony. Have to visit it sometime for old times’ sake. 🙂

i everyday eat khali dose here. khali dose taste is not constant everyday. price also increased. sikkapatte durase. chutney also not served properly.

  16. Mohan Prakash April 17, 2013 at 9:56 am #

The taste of the kali dosa is derived from the tasty chutney. but to conserve the consumption, the proprietor has increased the spice so much, you cant eat it. Avoid this hotel – good old times are gone!

    • Vijay April 17, 2013 at 10:01 am #

Mohan, its been a while since I have been there..

  17. sachin May 5, 2013 at 7:51 am #

This hotel has gone to its worst state…the owner and his employees seem to have no more values of serving good food to their customers…the money seems to have made them arrogant…do not go to dwaraka hotel anymore.

[…] For those of you who are not aware of Dwaraka Bhavan, it used to be on Bull Temple Road and offered the best Khali Dose in Bangalore (unlimited chutney of course). Suddenly the place disappeared from view (see previous post). After some great detective work (see comments on previous posts) mainly by RK’s family and friends, we found out that it was finally open in N.R. Colony. […]
