The day before Ugadi, Nikhil and I decided to take a walk in Gandhi Bazaar to soak up some of the sights and sounds…. actually it was really because the missus ordered us out of the house because we were getting in the way.
First stop was Vidyarthi Bhavan for a quick breakfast. The place was very crowded but being regulars, we were ushered into the store room where we ate sitting on some cardboard boxes… heres a view of the store and the Dosa.
Post that it was back to aimless wandering. Here are some pictures.

Since I am seeing the pictures of VB doses before my breakfast of “hot” oatmeal, I have NO pity for you sitting on cardboard boxes and also I now officially “hate” you until I get to VB and post my own pictures
I love looking at market pictures. I have so many from Mysore City Market. I love the compact Mysore market since I can see fresh veggies and bella all in the same area. I wonder how much of it will be left by this visit. Lots of it was crumbling down 2 years ago.
My kids have 2 auto toys that we have proudly displayed in the dining room glass case
. We walk everywhere and then take the autos home. Continue your blog with lots of Bangalore. Also, can you write something about SLV? My friend says that is something not be missed. This will ben our first visit aimlessly wandering around in Gandhibazaar. Until now we used to walk around in Brigade Road and Jayanagar Complex.

That looks really great Vijay. You know what? It reminds me of Bali, pre-terrorism, it’s so very natural. Who’d go to Bali now though? Well plenty of Aussies still do, but I think they’re all mad – I used to love the place but now I just stay away.

@My3: I thought you’d get a kick out of the “crisp” Dosa picture… My son (and I) had no complaints…There are several SLV’s in Bangalore, one of them is in BSK 2nd Stage….and of course theres Brahmins Coffee Bar… Mysore was where I used to spend my Holidays and Iyers Lunch Home (or Gully Hotel) was known for its “Set” Dose… In fact this weekend we plan to do some more wandering….
@Ray: Yes there are several similarities… the street market here is a daily one and co-exists with the big chains (gives them a run for their money in fact)

Glad you took my comment in the right spirit. I just showed the VB dose picture to my son who is studying(see that is whyI awarded you and Mrs. Nikhils Mom along with Nikhil
). Both of us are sighing and wondering when we can get out of this cold weather and back to Bangalore/Mysore and wandering around and drinking Nandini flavored milk and eating dose, rave idlis… All this is AFTER we have roundly finished up everything that ajji has made for us for breakfast. HA HA HA!! There is no limit to the NRI hotte!
We get the same service of being ushered in at MTR. I think my husband is the only one who knows them! They question him on his sons when he goes without them. Heh Heh Heh.
And yes, I agree with Mrs. Nikhil’s Mom. Cooking with men around and “helping” by stirring things and generally getting in the way is not conducive to quick and tasty cooking

@My3: lol.. no problems… The only problem is that when you get back to the USA after the visit you’ll find that you havent done half the things you hoped to do… My wife does not like me around while she cooks becuase I make “suggestions”.. good ones mind you but they are never appreciated
For the record.. I like cold weather… lived in Chicago and Boston for 7 years…
April 10, 2008 at 11:18 am |
Heh Heh Heh. We are from Buffalo
So we beat out Boston. Chicago??? Hmmm…not sure who is “better”. We like cold weather too. But after March it starts getting on our nerves and this year it is going on and on and on…
Hmmm…. I think the missus should start her own blog where we discuss the “suggestions” given to us
.

What a mean post with dose pictures and Gandhi bazaar. (Just kidding) Living in the US and looking at those pictures is not easy on my tummy. Gandhi Bazaar is my favorite place to wander aimlessly. Last time we were in India, my son who was then 5 would love to walk over there and have doses at roti ghar. Have not had the courage to go to vidyarthi bhavan because of the rush.
@My3 your comment on NRI hotte is so funny. You are absolutely right. We can have breakfast at home and go out and have two doses easily:-) last time we were in Bangalore, we felt so awkward sitting in Roti ghar and telling the waiter ‘innondu dose thgond banri’.

@Gowri: Thanks.. I do feel “wicked”
Until very recently my son would refuse to come into VB because of the rush… its only now that he goes in there and jostles with the crowd.. seems to enjoy it as well…
Talking about NRI hottes, when my uncle vists he brings a lot of immodium with him to face the “consequences”…

Isn’t it fun to hang out with your child, especially now that he is older and as tall as you? My older one is not even 5, but I totally love doing things with her, like as if she and I are only friends.
Nice pics.
I am sure it was fun for you. Enjoy!

@Chitra: True… only problem is he doesnt blindly come where I want to go.. theres always a discussion… I just bought him a camera… so he now has delusions of being a photographer
But mums and daughers make better friends.. so much so that after some time Dad gets totally left out

Great pictures, man. Also totally envious.
Happy New Year!

Thats fantastic Vijay. I loved that part of going out with kids.! I remember our eat out times with our father, Hotel Siddhartha and Ramya were two favourites.
During our times, children(specifically boys) was kind of afraid of fathers(their mark sheets and the exp) and now I see you and Niks totally enjoy doing all that.. Nice discussion going here.. I remember how I longed for udupi while I was in pheonix it was about a drive of 30 miles from downtown , I don’t think we would have done that if we were here alva?
Brahmin coffee bar’s coffee – best one till now, things like palamrutha icecream, such coffee benchmarks the quality and our tongue refuses to relish coffee day creams anymore!
ondu maaru hoovu eshTu rate? I remember paying 75/- bugs during ganesha fest. We paid 20/- here in mysore this ugadi!!

PHALAMRUTA near the bus stand was closed the last time I went to Mysore. Has it shifted elsewhere ??
April 12, 2008 at 3:25 am |
That dosa looks so much like a pesarattu! :–)
April 12, 2008 at 7:24 am |
@bpsk:sorry man.. that was the intent
@veena: correct !!
@neela: Phalamruta closed??? Veena is that true?
@rads: VB is known for its thick and crisp Dose…sagu masala dose is a speciality
April 12, 2008 at 3:36 pm |
I don’t have much idea, didn’t visit recently. I am still not allowed to have icecreams!
Pesarattu reminds me hyderabad, I was quite amazed when i first heard MLA pesarattu, it was famous because MLA’s used to eat and pesarattu has upittu instead of aloo palya.,
