If anyones noticed, theres a transport strike on. No trucks, tempos and other vehicles are moving in the city. That probably explained why it was such a pleasure driving today.
The bone of contention here is a Government order that requires them to install speed governors in their vehicles. This has been done to essentially ensure that these guys dont speed inside city limits. They contend that private vehicles need to have governors as well and that they are being victimized.
This is like saying “We’ll drive the way we wan’t to. So what if a few accidents happen”. The government tried to introduce this last year, but the threat of a strike forced them to hold off. They reintroduced it now… and the same result. They should not budge. Trucks, Buses, and Taxis cause the most accidents.
The sad part is that several daily wagers lose their livelihood because of this strike.

I know.. these HMV’s cause more number of incidents and the govt(read as Rameshwar Takur
) shouldn’t succumb for this strike..
and is there any way they can fit this speed governors to those heavy bikes? I heard there are some heavy bikes which costs more than a lakh (>250CC engines).. do they really need it ? I hear that most of the bike riders are part of these accident diers.!!

I am reminded of attempts by Kerala govt to make helmets compulsory! Law enforced-> Strike declared – > law forgotten Law nnounced again… it’s a never ending loop..

Here trying to introduce helmets and meters in taxis have acted as catalysts in bringing down govts…not that they need help to fall though !!

certainly not justified. if govt asks them to do something for public good accept your social responsibility and act. last sentence speaks volumes about ur concern to the people. a day lost is lost people starve because of want of food

In India, nothing legal is acceptable to organised unions. The government should ban the licences of all maxicab, lorry and bus services, which refuse the end the strike and install the speed governors. Bangalore does not need killer vehicles on the road.

We used to be always having transport strikes in Australia, mainly public transport (trains, trams & buses), but something happened and in the last 15 years or so there have hardly been any major strikes, in any industry.
I’m not sure what it was that stopped it happening but I think it was due to a combination of several things:
1. Wage accords between the unions and the bosses via the arbitration courts
2. Privatisation of the publicly owned transport infrastructures
3. The booming economy
Whatever the reason, it’s a lot better now. Nurses & teachers still go on regular strikes though. They’re employed by the Government, hmmm.

@Veena: Bike accidents are caused mostly by them verring into oncoming traffic rather than speed…
@Balu: Protesting is our birthright
@Neela: funny.. how about bars.. do they try any laws against them?
@Pranesh: Good point..
@Kumar: A little extreme but I have to agree that the Govt has to take a tough line
@Ray: The current strike is by the owners of the trucks who are protesting their right to drive at reckless speeds… Am wondering if this can be blamed on the Australian Cricket Team
They arent giving us any thing else to protest against

Yes, only if you know the reason cited by them for striking.
Political parties, especially the Grand Old Party of India, are abusing the new speed governor policy. They along with the unscrupulous vendors of those devices are fleecing 20 times the actual value!
The cheapest speed governor of the poorest quality costs 20K while you get good credible branded ones for a max of 3 and half to 4k in New Delhi and other places!
Long back there was an article in Prajavani/Deccan Herald detailing how political parties generate election money, it described all these tactics.
