Memories of Food

One of my fondest memories growing up in Bangalore and spending my holidays in Mysore at my granddad's are the eateries ("hotals" as we called them) that used to dot these places. Each one of them, a legend in its own right. Today these places are the only bond we have with the old times. Some of these have been frequented by my Granddad, my Father, and now my son. Even today the one common topic that binds the various generations together in my house is talk of all these eateries. Today, fast food places are cropping up all over the place, they are jazzier, and have more variety and better ambience, yet these old places do brisk business (the newer ones aren’t doing too badly either).

Unfortunately these places have slowly started to disappear. Maybe it’s because the newer generation don’t want to take over the place or maybe it’s because people’s tastes are changing.

When you talk about traditional restaurants in Bangalore, you hear about MTR. There are however many more that are equally good if not better. Iyers Lunch Home, and Mylari Hotel in Mysore, Maddur Railway Hotel (Tiffanys), and in Bangalore, Vidharthi Bhavan, Dwaraka, Brahmins Coffee Bar, Udipi Krishna Bhavan, VV Puram Food Street, Shivanna's Gulkand store….. The list could go on and on.

Each of these places has (or had) its own specialty, its own quirks, and its own history. There are instances where you would eat part of your breakfast in one place and then trek to another place to finish it (the breakfast process) off. Crazy I know, but that’s the way it went. Some of these places have ceased to exist. Others have become "modern". But memories of these can never be forgotten. The sights, sounds, and smells (some good some bad)… oh yeah and the food as well.

Agreed…..I just came to India a week ago and have a list of restaurants to visit. I started off with ‘churumuri gADi’ in Mysore.

One thing I noticed while driving from Bangalore to Mysore last week was that the look of Maddur Tiffanys has compeltely changed. Apparently, the MTR funded restaurnat close by is a much more popular place nowadays. I also happened to see the “kavitha Mid-way restaurant” where all the Bangalore-Mysore KSRTC (red) buses used to stop. It’s still in the same dilapidated condition. But, it sure brought back a lot of memories. And, of courese eLanIru all over the place beats all the restaurants.

I will be in Bangalore over the weekend and have a huge list of restaurants to go to :)

Unfortunately the road works along the Bangalore Mysore road have seen the end of many trees and yelaniru places.

There is a place off the bridge in Bidadi that makes great “Thatte Idli” you should try that.

Of course while in Bangalore please dont forget to go to the VV Puram food street :-)

I am new to Bangalore. So please help me locating these places you mentioned.
    1. Vidhyarthi Bhavan
    2. Dwaraka
    1& 2 are in Basavngudi, right ?

    3. Brahmins Coffee Bar
    4. Udupi Krishna Bhavan
    5. VV Puram food street
    6. Shivanna’s Gulkand Store

I am not sure about where 3-6 are located ?

Vidhyarthi Bhavan is in B’gudi but to be precise Gandhi Bazaar right where the market is. Dwaraka was on Bull Temple Road. Unfortunately the building has been demolished. I dont know whether they are building it new or the place has closed down.

To get to Brahmins Cofee Bar take the National College Flyover from Lalbagh West Gate and take a right on Ranga Rao Road. Ask anyone in that area and they should point you to Brahmins.

The Original Udupi Krishna Bhavan is in Avenue Road. Directions are too complicated. However they do have a branch in Koramangala next to Jyothi Nivas College.

VV Puram food street is right off of VV Puram Circle. You can ask anyone when you get there. The only thing to note is that the shops here open only in the evening.

Shivanna’s store is at the end of food street. Try the Masala coke or fanta.. its an intersting place..

    Enjoy…

Thanks. I have already eaten at the Udupi Krishna Bhavan near Jyothi Nivas College – clean place, but average fare. How about a list of places for good Filter-Kaapi ? :-)

  6. Vijay Says:

Both Vidhyarthi Bhavan and Brahmins Coffee Bar make excellent coffee.

If you get to go to VB, go in the morning on a weekday dont risk weekends and evenings. Too many people. Try the saagu masale …
